What is EMF? - Orgone Energy Australia

What is EMF?

In our modern world electromagnetic fields are all around us. But what is EMF?

In our modern world, electromagnetic fields are all around us. But what is EMF?

We are all used to the modern life offered by electronic conveniences. But few of us are aware of the potential health risks posed by the devices that make our world work. Our cell phones, power lines, computers, wireless routers, microwaves, and other devices give off a stream of invisible energy waves

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are created wherever electricity is used, including at home and work.

Some experts are concerned about the potential health effects of these fields. But should we worry?

What Does the Research Say?

Although most researchers do not believe that most electromagnetic fields are dangerous, some scientists still question the safety of exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Many say there isn’t enough research to understand whether electromagnetic fields are safe. Let’s take a closer look.

What is an Electromagnetic Field in Simple Words?

Magnetic and electric fields are invisible aspects of energy (also known as radiation) created by electricity, that is, the flow of electrons or electricity through a wire.

An electric field is created by voltage, the pressure is used to push electrons through the wire, much like the way water is pushed through a pipe. As the voltage surges, the strength of the electric field surges as well.

A magnetic field is created by the flow of current through electrical devices or cables and increases in strength as the current increases. A magnetic field’s strength rapidly decreases with increasing distance from its source.

Electric fields occur regardless of whether a device is turned on or not, while magnetic fields only occur when current is flowing, which typically requires a device to be turned on.

Power lines constantly generate magnetic fields because electricity is regularly passing through them. Electric fields are easily guarded or diminished by walls as well as other items, while magnetic fields can penetrate buildings, living beings, and most other items.

What Causes EMF Fields?

Electric and magnetic fields are called electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Electric and magnetic forces in electromagnetic fields are caused by electromagnetic radiation. There are two major categories of electromagnetic fields:

Radiofrequency (RF) EMF, which includes gamma rays and X-rays. These electromagnetic fields are in the range of ionizing radiation of the electromagnetic spectrum and can damage cells or DNA directly.

Low to medium frequency electromagnetic fields, including static fields (magnetic or electric fields that do not change over time), magnetic fields from electrical lines and devices, visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves, and radio waves. These electromagnetic fields are known as non-ionizing radiation and are believed to not damage cells or DNA directly.

Low to medium-frequency electromagnetic fields include extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) and radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. Extremely low-frequency EMFs have frequencies up to 300 cycles per second, or Hertz (Hz), and radiofrequency EMFs range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Radiofrequency radiation is measured in watts per square meter (W/m2).

Common Sources of Non-ionizing EMFs

There are both man-made and natural sources of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields

The Earth’s magnetic field, which makes a compass needle point north, is an example of naturally occurring EMF.

Man-made electromagnetic fields belong to the radiofrequency and ELF categories of the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum. These electromagnetic fields can come from various sources.

Sources of Extremely Low-Frequency EMFs are electrical wiring, power lines, and electrical devices such as electric blankets, hairdryers, and shavers.

The most common sources of RF radiation are wireless telecommunications equipment and devices, including smart meters, cell phones, and portable wireless appliances such as laptops and tablets.

In the US, mobile phones currently operate in a frequency range of around 1.8-2.2 GHz.

Is EMF Harmful to Humans?

Whether electric and magnetic fields are in any way related to the disease is a long-standing debate for which there isn’t any scientifically-conclusive answer.

The final decision on safe exposure levels rests with the government and is subject to advice from the international governing bodies and Health Protection Agency.

There is disagreement in the scientific literature on whether and to what extent electromagnetic fields pose a threat to human health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified non-ionizing radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as Group 2B, a possible human carcinogen. These fields are generated by electronic products such as cell phones, tablets, and smart devices.

IARC is subordinate to the World Health Organization (WHO). It regularly brings together working groups of scientists from around the world to assess cancer risks in humans due to lifestyle and environmental factors.

The current IARC evaluation in 2011 indicated a possible link between radiofrequency radiation and cancer in humans, especially glioma, a malignant form of brain tumor.

This conclusion means that there may be some risk. The report highlighted that the link between cell phone use and cancer risk must be monitored carefully by the scientific community.

It said that more research is needed on the intensive and long-term use of cell phones.

Some researchers believe that there is already enough evidence of harm from long-term, low-intensity exposure to non-ionizing radiation for the IARC to improve the classification to Group one, a known carcinogen.

In 2000, researchers embarked on extensive research into the possible association between cell phones and cancer in what would become the largest study comparing cancer cases among mobile phone users and non-users. Researchers have tracked cancer rates and mobile phone use in over 5,000 people in 13 countries. They found a vague association between a higher exposure rate and glioma. Gliomas were most often found on the side of the head that was used for making phone calls.

Despite this, the researchers noted the connection was not strong enough to conclude that mobile phone use causes cancer.

In a smaller and more recent study, researchers analyzed data spanning nearly two decades and found that people exposed to high levels of ELF-EMFs for long periods were at risk of an increase in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

European scientists have also discovered a possible link between electromagnetic fields and childhood leukemia.

In a literature review of earlier studies, they suggested that between 1.5% and 5% of childhood leukemias are due to ELF-EMFs.

However, they found that the result was inconclusive due to the lack of monitoring of electromagnetic fields. They recommended better follow-up and more research.

A review of over two dozen studies of low-frequency electromagnetic fields suggests that these energy fields can cause a variety of psychiatric and neurological problems in humans.

In a study, researchers found that an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), or a brief burst of electromagnetic energy, can affect nerve activity in rats. They suggested that prolonged exposure to EMP could impair cognitive abilities and produce a pathology comparable to that of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers added that further research was needed.

Possible symptoms linked with exposure to EMFs in the studies were:

  • headache
  • sleep disorder
  • loss of concentration
  • memory loss
  • dizziness
  • tremor

Wrapping Up

Electromagnetic fields occur in nature and also come from man-made sources. Regulators and scientists agree that low-frequency electromagnetic fields pose little danger to human health. However, some researchers provide preliminary evidence that there may be some risk with long-term use, particularly in the cognitive function of the brain and nervous system.

Exposure to high levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields is known to impair DNA and human cells. However, it is very unlikely that you will be exposed to high concentrations in daily life to endanger your health. The exposure occurs mainly in small amounts.

The best approach to protecting yourself against the dangers of EMF is to be aware of its existence and be smart regarding your exposure. This is an evolving area of research that will no doubt grow as we increasingly use labor-saving machines and wireless devices.
