With 5G rapidly rolling out across the globe, a burning question lingers in many minds: Could this revolutionary technology be linked to cancer? We delve into the research to separate fact from fiction.

With the advancement of technology, the introduction of 5G networks has brought about significant excitement and anticipation for a future with lightning-fast internet speeds and seamless connectivity.

As with any new technology, questions and concerns arise regarding its safety and potential health risks.

In order to address these concerns, it is crucial to examine the scientific evidence behind 5G technology. By examining the scientific evidence, we can obtain a clearer understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with 5G technology, thus enabling us to make informed decisions and policies regarding its implementation.

Comprehensive Reviews on Potential Health Effects of 5G Exposure

Comprehensive reviews of relevant studies and experimental results have been conducted to assess the potential health effects of 5G technology. An article published in ScienceDirect penned by four experts expressed many concerns about potential health problems from invisible radio waves (like those from cell phones and Wi-Fi).

The article says most studies so far haven't looked at the kind of real-world situations we face, like using phones that constantly switch their signal on and off. They also haven't looked at how these radio waves might combine with other things in our environment, like pollution, to make health problems worse.

The article also worries that the new 5G technology might not just affect our skin and eyes, but could have other problems for our whole body. The article outlined their concerns in the graphic below:

The International Society of Doctors for the Environment put out a statement calling for a pause in the development of 5G. The group cited concerns about an increase in cell towers. The paper also stated:

Specific preliminary evidence showed the exposure to frequencies over 30GHz could alter gene expression, increase the temperature of the skin, stimulate cell proliferation, alter the functions of cell membrane and neuro-muscular systems and are able to modulate the synthesis of proteins involved in inflammatory and immunologic processes, with possible systemic effects.

The Oceania Radiofrequency Scientific Advisory Association is an independent organization who reviewed scientific evidence on EMF. The group created a database of EMF Bioeffects which primarily focuses on non-thermal effects which occur below the  International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) thermal short-term limit. A summary of the findings are found below:

Does 5G Cause Cancer?

There is a potential risk of brain tumors associated with exposure to 5G frequencies. Several studies suggest a possible link between the two, although further research is needed to establish a conclusive relationship.

Brain tumor risk from exposure to 5G frequencies

Research conducted on this topic has primarily been observational studies and animal experiments. In observational studies, researchers have observed an increase in the incidence of brain tumors in individuals living near 5G transmitter stations.

Animal experiments have also been conducted to examine the effects of exposure to 5G frequencies.

These studies have shown an increase in the growth of brain tumors in animals exposed to high levels of 5G radiation.

While these findings provide some evidence of a potential risk, the extrapolation to human populations is challenging, and more research is necessary.

Despite the limited evidence, some identified risks associated with 5G networks include potential thermal effects on tissues, especially in organs near 5G transmitters, such as the brain.

Additionally, the high-frequency nature of 5G radiation means that it can penetrate deeper into the body, potentially increasing the risk of exposure-related health issues.

Does 5G Exposure Affect Fertility?

One area of concern is the reproductive effects of exposure to 5G radiation.

Studies have shown that exposure to high levels of radiofrequency radiation can lead to reduced sperm count, motility, and viability, which may impact fertility and reproductive health.

Does 5G Exposure Impact COVID-19?

A study published in the National Library of Medicine concluded that exposure to everyday wireless signals (like cell phones and Wi-Fi) might act as a general stressor on the body. This stress, they propose, could worsen health outcomes for people infected with the COVID-19 virus and make the illness more severe.

Does 5G Exposure Affect Immune Function?

Furthermore, the effects of 5G technology on immune function have been investigated. Some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to 5G radiation may weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and diseases.

However, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and extent of these effects.

Does 5G Exposure Cause Inflammation?

Another aspect that has been studied is the impact of 5G radiation on fatty acid composition. Research has indicated that exposure to 5G radiation may alter the fatty acid profile, particularly in cell membranes. This can have implications for various physiological processes, including inflammation and cell signaling.

Current Understanding of 5G's Impact on Human Health

The current understanding of 5G's impact on human health based on the provided information is marked by several concerns and inconsistent research findings.

While some studies suggest potential health risks associated with the deployment of 5G technology, others argue that there is a lack of conclusive evidence to support such claims.

One of the major concerns surrounding 5G technology is the lack of long-term testing on its effects on human health.

5G is a relatively new technology, there is a limited amount of research available to analyze its potential impact.

This dearth of research makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about the health risks associated with this technology.

A 2023 study published in the National Library of Medicine suggested that the roll out of 5G was based on the ‘assumption of safety’ rather than scientific evidence of its safety. Often, safety decisions are based on summaries of many research papers, not each paper itself. But these summaries might leave out important studies or only show a limited view of the research.

Their study aims to show a broader picture of research on the health effects of millimeter waves (mmWaves), the type of radiation used by 5G. Their findings are listed in the table below:

One specific concern is the possible genetic effects of 5G radiation. Some studies have indicated that exposure to high-frequency electromagnetic fields, like those used in 5G, could potentially cause DNA damage and genetic mutations, increasing the risk of certain diseases.
